I remember once telling my best friend that we all are whatever we want to be. Cant you invent yourself in your head and play that role? Isn’t that what discovering yourself is about? Maybe the person who understands who I am is not myself. How do I know what and who I am, is who I am supposed to be, or if I am my own made up idea? We are all our own ideas. We are our numerous of ideas put together into one.

  3. I totally agree what your first statement. Who is it that says we're "supposed" to be something? Maybe we are all our own made up idea. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

"All we are is a result of what we have thought."

I'm not Buddhist but I truly believe in this statement.

  4. Interesting and 'telling' post. Although, you cannot discover yourself, if you 'invent' who you are. You may be able to create roles, but you are acting-out an idea, a thought, a person.

You, as a person, are not purely created by ideas. The notion of who you are supposed to be, and who you are, cannot match each other.

You may start out with various ideas, but the real YOU, is challenged by your experiences, interactions, emotions, behavior, feelings.

We can be whatever we want is riddled with the many decisions, compromises, agreements, consistently changing thoughts, ideas, feelings, and life events and experiences.

Most likely, you are not the one who understands yourself. There are fundamental flaws in understanding YOU. One of the biggest is objectivity. How can you be objective when understanding yourself. You are not the one who knows and understands you best.

The theory of you post is significant and very thought provoking. Who you are and who you are supposed to be will continuously change.

Yes, you have discovered a very deep, interesting, thought process in your post. Not easily understood for many - It does show and demonstrate a unique part of yourself.

The person who understands who you are - it is not you. From your 'way of thinking', vision, creativity, words, expressions, etc... It tells me more about who you 'are'.

This is a very philosophical, creative, abstract, artistic, and conceptual method of knowing your deep, core, real personality and insight for understanding YOU more and more..

  5. Maybe we are what we are, we change, we grow, we regress at times. Slotting into the boxes that society maps out, conforming to what is the norm.
Not being different for the sake of it, but being what we want to be or whom we think we are. We are also many things to many people, a role in life not being single threaded. Asking the questions of oneself, having the insight to ask, and being brave to hear the answer/s. For me, I am what I am, at this moment, in this place, tomorrow I might be someone else...

  7. Perhaps the healthiest way to be is to grow. Think of yourself the way you think of your art. A work in progress. Along the way, you discover that what seemed like a good idea at the time might not be so good to repeat. We learn by doing, as Fred says, and that involves accepting that not all we do is stunningly wonderful or profound. From what I see, you are doing fine!

  9. I think who we are is how we react and respond to the flow of events that is our lives. When we achieve resonance whit our lives, i think this tells us who we are.

To your point Joey, I'll use the example of instrumental music. All music is just vibrations in the air. As these collections of vibrations pass through us they cause a resonance in us. Some we like, some we don't like, but how do we what feels best if we don't change the tune?

I think we do invent and reinvent ourselves in the journey of discovery. Does get in the way? Of course. Can we be whatever we want? Not exactly. I think the real issue is that we are not sure what we want.

The only way to know is listen to the music and change the tune.

  10. We are who we choose to be, or at least that's how I view it. I always thought it was interesting that a person's self-image is how he/she thinks they are perceived through others. What is the difference between how you think others see you and how you see yourself? When the answer to that question is none, then, IMHO, you've gotten to a pretty special place in your life.
